Evaluation Question Five

Our audience feedback was mainly very positive. I have discussed below some of the feedback we received and what we could do with it in the future if we were to produce more music videos and products.

If we were to undertake the production process again we would take our audience feedback into consideration so that we would build on the knowledge we already had prior to the production process. As well as constructive criticism we also received many positive comments such as that our video did portray the indie genre and that our video was very 'Arctic Monkeys esc'. This made us feel proud of the product we created and as though we had been successful in the creation of our music video.

I also undertook some feedback for my own products. My digipak and poster both received positive feedback with viewers saying that they felt they all fit together well often because of the colour blue linking them all together. All in all, the feedback was very helpful and positive which confirmed to me that I had created some great products that would be successful in the real world music industry.

Evaluation Question Four

Our target audience were ages ranging in the mid to late teens and maybe a little older. This is who we primarily aimed to give our questionnaire to so that we got a detailed response from people of that age. However, we did also give the questionnaire to people above the target age so that it was more representative.

After collecting their responses we felt very positively about the product we had produced together (the music video) and I felt confident about the poster and digipak I had produced myself.

We also wanted to make our music video appeal to both the male and female gender. We did this for males by including males in the video itself (the band members). This would lead our male audience to idolise the stars and want to be like them. As well as this the males in the band would lead the female audience to be interested in the video due to their natural attraction mentioned in the female gaze theory. This was successful for our video due to the questionnaire results being so positive for both male and female respondents.

Finally, the age of the band members themselves would lead to the audience feeling positive about the music video due to them feeling they could relate to them. Our band members ranged in ages from 16-19. This works well with our target audience as we aimed our music video and I aimed my individual products at people in the mid and late teens leading them to feel engaged with the products. Many boys within the audience would also be able to recognise themselves in the band members when they were out having fun with their friends.

Comments On Our Music Video

As well as our questionnaire we had a few comments on the video itself. I shall insert a screenshot below. The comments were very positive and allowed us to feel that we produced the music video to a great standard to achieve the positive comments.

My Band Poster

The next task I had to do was to create a band poster that could be inserted into a magazine. I created this using the Adobe Photoshop Software. This is the part that I have enjoyed most as I was able to be creative and test out my skills within the software. I chose to do a tour poster over a album release poster as I felt this would allow me to be most creative. Below are some images of the different stages in the poster making process:

Firstly, I reminded myself of the kind of posters in the indie genre:

I then researched the real tour dates and venues for The Neighbourhood so that I could mirror their band as close as possible so that I was sure it was an accurate representation of the indie genre:

These were previous recent gigs:

And finally, the final band poster piece ...

How The Digipak Turned Out

The digipak making process went very well and the final product came out as I had planned. I was able to follow the type of theme we had with the music video. We were also able to make the digipak fairly cheap as we used shots from the music video or photos we took along the way. The only cost used from this process was for petrol. This is great as it reflects the way a real indie band would produce their digipaks and CD cases.

At the beginning of our music video we used the circles placed over the guitar, we continued this onto the digipak and made it a feature of The California Strippers video. Other than that I kept the digipak in black and white which again was a feature of the music video and a theme throughout the indie genre.

The rest of the digipak is mainly focused on images of the band. This would help in the real world with the association and star image of the band as they would be a new band starting out and the audience wouldn't be aware of who the band are in the beginning.

Plan for Digipak

The digipak will have to reflect both the style we have used throughout our music video and the themes we have identified through other indie digipaks. Indie digipaks are often kept quite simple due to the bands not having a lot of spare money for the production of a professional digipak.

This is my plan for my digipak

A2 Music Video - Prey

This is our final version of the music video we have created. We are very happy with the outcome!

The Editing Process

The editing software we have been using is Adobe Premiere Pro. We have a good chunk of the music video filmed and edited. I enjoy using Adobe Premiere Pro because we are able to produce the look we want due to us using the software previously for things such as our AS preliminary task and AS film opening. This time we have a much better understanding of the software meaning we can produce a high quality piece of work using the effects to our advantage.

Update on The Plan of The Music Video

Our original idea was to have a narrative throughout the music video as well as the band at the start. However, we shot many clips featuring the actors we were planning to use that I will feature screen shots of below:

When editing the music video and inputting these shots, they did not fit with the type of video we were wanting to make. It did not turn out the way we were expecting. This may have been because the age of the actors we used as they were young and therefore made the music video look less professional. As well as this it may have been the amount of footage we were able to shoot due to the lack of light at this time of year.

Due to this we have chosen to try to shoot some more of the band outside on a nice day to input into the parts we have already edited. It will not be completely studio based as in the indie genre it is common for the band to be seen outside doing fun things that show their friendship. This could also be achieved on a low budget which indie bands are often forced to do as they do not have the funds for a 'Hollywood' style music video.

A possible location that we could use could be Matlock, Derbyshire, UK. This is a quiet town in Derbyshire where there are often events held. When these are not happening it is a great scenic location to visit making it perfect for our music video. There is the possibility for us to go into the arcades, walk along the river and shoot many more clips that will fit nicely into our music video.

The Subgenres Within the Indie Genre

An 'indie' band refers to "a small independent pop group, record label, or film company". However, within the music industry of indie bands their are different types of subgenres within 'indie'.

Firstly we have indie pop. This subgenre is partly 'indie rock' and a subculture that was originated in the UK in the late 1970s. Indie pop is different to indie rock as it is more melodic and less abrasive. Examples of indie pop bands are people such as 'The Smiths' 'Vampire Weekend' and 'Florence and the Machine'.

As well as indie pop there is a subgenre of indie rock as discussed before. Indie rock is "linked by an ethos more than a musical approach". There are a wide range of styles within the indie rock genre. Examples of these are; hard-edged and grunge influenced. This genre is often found through Do-It-Yourself methods. The bands associated with this genre are people such as 'The Strokes' and 'The Arctic Monkeys'.
